Sashiko Design

Kiyomi was born in Saitama, a city 30km north of Tokyo, Japan. In 2000, Kiyomi migrated to Australia with her Australian husband, Andrew, and founded Sashiko Design at Hobart's Salamanca Market.

Kiyomi's range of bags are made with a combination of Japanese vintage Kimono, denim, cotton and leather. Dark denim gives the designs an Australian feel and she introduces Japanese culture using kimono fabric and sashiko stitching. The diverse range of vintage kimonos allows Kiyomi to offer her clients unique and individual pieces.

For Kiyomi, the process of designing is organic and intuitive. Rather than drawing her designs on paper, Kiyomi maintains a clear vision in her mind and works directly with materials until the design looks and feels right. Seeing the appreciation on people's faces when they see her work inspires Kiyomi to continue to create her stunning bags.
