About the distillery

Old Kempton Distillery is located in the historic town of Kempton in the Southern Midlands and is in the iconic ‘Dysart House’, the circa 1840s coach house and inn. The History of Dysart House and Old Kempton Distillery are now greatly intertwined. Its award-winning gin is named after William Ellis, who built Dysart House in the 1840s. The front rooms of the heritage-listed house have been restored, offering an engaging cellar door and café experience for customers, plus a newly-opened Cask Lounge for customers to relax and enjoy a dram in.

We are an easy 40-minute drive from Hobart and approximately 2 hours from Launceston.

What is it like to run a whisky distillery?

It is never boring, especially over the last 12 months. Every day brings different challenges, but we are very appreciative of the support from our customers. We strive to ensure every customer thoroughly enjoys their visit to our cellar door and café and it's their enjoyment that keeps us motivated.

What makes your whisky so special?

Old Kempton Distillery’s approach to small-batch production allows it to be very quality focused with everything that is distilled. The entire team at Old Kempton Distillery is passionate about every area of the business. There are three key inputs that make Old Kempton whisky what it is - the quality of the water and barley, and the hands-on approach to the distillation. The barley used to distil whisky is predominantly Tasmanian grown and malted. The water supply to Old Kempton Distillery is from the highland lakes district in central Tasmania and is some of the purest in the world. The distillery also accesses a small spring on the property.

What whisky do you make?

Our Single Malt Whisky is available in our Classic range, using ex pinot, port and sherry casks at 46%. We also have Old Stables, Solera, Cask Strength and Special Releases.

Why do you like about having a stall at Salamanca Market?

It is such a great way to express our passion and love for whisky and Old Kempton Distillery to people at the market and engage with them about their thoughts and feedback. It is such a fun way to get our products out there with everyone and have them fall in love with our whisky, just as we have.

What is your market best seller?

Our Old Stables Whisky, Solera Cask Whisky & Lavender Malt Liqueur. People love how smooth & how well-crafted our small batch whiskies are.

What's the best driving route to your cellar door?

We are located just off the Midlands Highway, roughly 40 minutes from Hobart or 2 hours from Launceston. If you are coming from Hobart, Shene Distillery in Pontville is about 10 minutes before us. If you're coming from Launceston, there are some beautiful historic towns just off the highway, and Ross and Oatlands are a must.

Currently we are the first from the north operating distillery.
